Functional Strength Integration After Total Hip Arthroplasty
A randomized trial compared a hip- and pelvis-focused rehabilitation program with a representative standard program after hip replacement. Both groups improved; the walking result did not separate them. Here is what was studied, what was found, and what the authors concluded.

This course is written for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who see patients during the first weeks and months after total hip replacement, in outpatient clinics, home health, or post-acute settings. Physical therapists will find the trial’s design and outcome selection relevant to how they evaluate patients and set a plan of care. Physical therapist assistants, working under the direction of a physical therapist, will find the description of the two exercise programs and the reported recovery pattern useful background for the treatment sessions they deliver. No research training is assumed; every finding is reported in plain language.
Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in outpatient orthopedics, home health, acute care, and post-acute rehabilitation settings who treat adults after primary total hip arthroplasty.

This course is based entirely on one article: Judd DL, Cheuy V, Peters A, Graber J, Hinrichs-Kinney L, Forster JE, Christiansen CL, Stevens-Lapsley JE. “Incorporating Functional Strength Integration Techniques During Total Hip Arthroplasty Rehabilitation.” Physical Therapy, volume 104, issue 3, article pzad168.
The study was a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (CT02920866), approved by the Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board and the Veterans Administration Research and Development Committee, and supported by a Merit Review Award from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Service. The funding source had no role in the design, conduct, or reporting of the study, and the authors reported no conflicts of interest.

After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the population, design, and two rehabilitation programs compared in this randomized trial of functional strength integration after total hip arthroplasty.
- State the trial's primary six-minute walk finding and name the one secondary outcome that favored the functional strength integration group.
- Explain the limitations the authors identified and the conclusions they drew about rehabilitation after total hip replacement.
