Technology-Assisted Walking Recovery After Stroke: What a Pooled Exoskeleton Review and a Dual-Task Exergaming Trial Reported

Two papers, two technologies, one question: does technology-assisted training improve walking and dual-task performance after stroke, and for whom?

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants working with adults after stroke in inpatient rehabilitation, subacute and outpatient neurologic settings, and anyone deciding how robotic or gamified equipment fits into a gait program. Physical therapist assistants contribute to delivery of the plan of care under the direction of the supervising physical therapist.

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in neurologic, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient practice.

Based on

This course reports the findings of two published papers and nothing beyond them. Every figure and conclusion is attributed in text to the paper that reported it.

Lee MH, Tian MY, Kim MK. The Effectiveness of Overground Robot Exoskeleton Gait Training on Gait Outcomes, Balance, and Motor Function in Patients with Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Brain Sci. 2024;14(8). doi:10.3390/brainsci14080834. PMID 39199525; PMCID PMC11352614.

Jo S, Kim H, Song C. Dual-task exergaming to enhance motor and cognitive function in chronic stroke: a prospective, assessor-blinded, parallel group randomized controlled trial. J Neuroeng Rehabil. 2026;23(1). doi:10.1186/s12984-026-01913-y. PMID 41715216; PMCID PMC13019995.

A note on scope

Where the two papers point in different directions, this course says so and names which paper reported which finding. It does not average them and does not resolve the disagreement on the learner’s behalf.
