Technology-Assisted Upper Limb Recovery After Stroke: What an Umbrella Review of Robot Therapy and a Home-Based Virtual Reality Trial Report

Two papers, one question: does technology-assisted arm therapy improve recovery after stroke, and does the benefit hold up when the device goes home with the patient?

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who work with people recovering arm and hand function after stroke, in inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient neurologic practice, or home health, and who are being asked whether robotic and virtual reality tools earn their place in a plan of care.

Licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, rehabilitation nurses, and athletic trainers working with stroke survivors may also find the material relevant. Physical therapist assistants participate under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, who retains evaluation, diagnosis, and plan-of-care decisions.

How the two papers are used

Every finding in this course is attributed to the paper that reported it. The umbrella review summarizes a large body of clinic-based robot therapy evidence; the randomized trial reports one small home-based virtual reality program. Where they point in different directions, the course says so rather than blending them.
